Clear Aligners: A Complete Guide

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are clear, removable trays that gradually straighten your teeth without metal brackets or wires. Custom-made from smooth, BPA-free thermoplastic, they fit snugly over your teeth and shift them into position over time. Most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

At Paul DiFranco Orthodontics, we offer Spark™ clear aligners. These trays are clear and removable, so you can take them out whenever you need to and slip them back in without anyone noticing.

Each set of trays is designed for your specific bite. You wear them throughout the day and switch to a new set on a schedule set by Dr. Paul E. DiFranco. The fit is snug and precise, which keeps your teeth moving steadily toward their final position.

For adults and teens who want a low-profile way to straighten their smile, clear aligners check a lot of boxes. They’re comfortable, easy to clean, and built for real life.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligner treatment uses a series of custom trays that apply gentle, targeted pressure to move your teeth into proper alignment. The process begins with a 3D digital scan, includes a personalized treatment plan, and progresses through a sequence of trays worn for 20-22 hours each day. Periodic checkups keep your progress on track.

Here’s what to expect at our practice:

  1. Digital scan and planning. We use the iTero® scanner to capture a detailed 3D image of your teeth. No messy molds. This scan maps out your starting point and the projected movement of each tooth.
  2. Custom tray fabrication. Your aligners are made specifically for your bite using the data from your scan.
  3. Wearing your aligners. You’ll switch to a new set every 1-2 weeks, depending on your personalized treatment plan. Each tray builds on the progress of the last.
  4. Daily wear time. For best results, wear your aligners 20-22 hours a day. You only take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.
  5. Progress checkups. You’ll visit our practice every few weeks so Dr. DiFranco can confirm your teeth are tracking as planned.

The whole system runs on consistency. Wear your trays, switch on schedule, and your smile keeps moving forward.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are virtually invisible, removable for meals and cleaning, comfortable to wear, and often require fewer office visits than metal braces. They blend treatment into your daily life rather than interrupting it, which is why so many of our patients at Paul DiFranco Orthodontics choose them.

Key benefits include:

  • Virtually invisible. The trays are made from a transparent material that’s hard to spot, even up close.
  • Removable for meals and hygiene. Take them out to eat what you love. Brush and floss like you normally would.
  • More comfortable wear. No brackets to rub against your cheeks, and no wires to poke your gums.
  • Fewer office visits. Many of our patients come in less often than they would with metal braces.
  • Better oral health during treatment. Because you can fully clean your teeth, you’re less likely to deal with plaque buildup or staining.

Are Clear Aligners Right for a Busy Lifestyle?

Clear aligners tend to fit packed schedules well. A working professional can keep treatment quiet during meetings, and a high school student juggling activities can stay focused on practice and homework. You keep your routine while your smile changes in the background.

Do Clear Aligners Make Daily Care Easier?

Yes. Since the trays come out, brushing and flossing stay simple. You don’t have to thread floss around brackets or work around wires. Cleaner teeth during treatment often means healthier gums and brighter results when you finish.

Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces

Both options can deliver beautiful, healthy smiles. The right choice depends on your goals, your bite, and how you want treatment to fit into your life.

Feature Spark™ Clear Aligners Damon® Clear Braces / Metal Braces
Appearance Nearly invisible trays Clear ceramic or metal brackets
Removability Removable for meals and cleaning Fixed in place during treatment
Comfort Smooth plastic, no brackets Smooth brackets, occasional adjustments
Diet No food restrictions Some foods to avoid (sticky, hard)
Cleaning Brush and floss normally Requires extra care around brackets
Best for Mild to moderate cases Mild to complex cases
Visit frequency Often fewer checkups Regular adjustments needed

Clear aligners are a great fit for crowding, gaps, and many bite issues. For more complex cases, Dr. DiFranco may recommend Damon® clear braces or Damon ultima™ braces, which can handle a wider range of tooth movements while still looking clean and modern. During your free consult, we’ll walk through which option matches your smile goals.

Clear Aligner Cost & Financing Factors

The cost of clear aligners varies from patient to patient. Several factors shape the final price, and we want you to understand what goes into it before you commit.

Cost factors include:

  • Case complexity. Minor crowding usually costs less than a case that needs to correct a bite issue along with alignment.
  • Treatment length. Longer treatment often means more trays and more checkups.
  • Number of aligner sets. Some cases need a handful of trays. Others need many more to reach the final result.
  • Orthodontic benefits. Many plans help cover part of orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners.
  • Payment options. We offer flexible payment plans and accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards.

Cost shouldn’t stand between you and the smile you’re after. During your free consult at our practice, we’ll review your orthodontic benefits and walk through financing options so you know exactly what to expect.

Are You a Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners work well for many smiles, but they’re not the right fit for every case. The best way to know is to schedule a free consult with Dr. DiFranco, who draws on years of clinical experience to assess your bite and recommend the right path.

You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Mild to moderate crowding
  • Gaps or spacing between teeth
  • Mild to moderate bite issues, including overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Healthy teeth and gums (no untreated decay or gum disease)
  • The discipline to wear your trays 20-22 hours a day

Both teens and adults can be excellent candidates. For teens, we look at whether the permanent teeth have come in enough to support treatment. For adults, it’s never too late to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.

More complex bite or jaw issues may call for Damon® clear braces or another option. Dr. DiFranco will give you an honest answer about which path will get you to the best result.

Clear Aligner FAQs

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

Most clear aligner treatment takes 12-24 months, though some mild cases finish sooner and complex ones take longer. Your timeline depends on how much movement your teeth need and how consistently you wear your trays. Dr. DiFranco will give you a clearer estimate after reviewing your 3D scan during your free consult.

Do clear aligners hurt?

Clear aligners are gentle, though you may feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two each time you switch to a new tray. That feeling is normal and means your teeth are moving. Most of our patients say the discomfort is mild and fades quickly.

How do I clean my aligners?

Rinse your aligners every time you take them out. Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap or an aligner-cleaning solution. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic, and steer clear of toothpaste, which can scratch the trays and make them cloudy.

Can I eat with clear aligners in?

No. You should always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. Eating with them in can damage the trays and trap food against your teeth. Brush your teeth before putting them back in to keep your smile and your aligners clean.

Will I need a retainer after treatment?

Yes. After your teeth reach their new position, you’ll wear an orthodontic retainer to keep them there. Without one, teeth can slowly shift back over time. Dr. DiFranco will explain your retainer plan as you finish treatment so your results last. If you have any questions about clear aligners or what comes next, our team is always happy to help you start smiling and feel confident about your treatment.
